Christ Will Build His Church
Jesus Christ has promised, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). We rest upon this sure promise of our exalted and soon-coming King. The resurrected Christ thus commands His church: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20).
We engage in domestic and foreign missions as outworking of our identity as those united to Christ and to one another in His body, the church; and we do so with an sober-minded and awe-filled awareness of the weight and significance of our calling as Christ’s church expressed so well by J. Gresham Machen—
“At the very heart of the real Christian missionary message is the conviction that every individual hearer to whom the missionary goes is in deadly peril, and that unless the message is heeded he is without hope in this world and in the dreadful world to come.”
We embrace both the promise and the command of our Lord as we prayerfully labor in the gospel for the salvation of sinners from every language, people, and nation—all to the glory of our Triune God.
Missions at HTPC
Our church allocates a significant portion of its annual budget to the support of missionary labors in the United States and around the world. As we partner with missionaries, we seek to develop full-orbed relationships with them through prayer, regular visits, and short-term mission trips. We also pray that members of our church will be sent out into the missionary field as bearers of the good news of Jesus Christ.
Our philosophy of missions derives directly from the Biblical model. We seek to establish and nurture Presbyterian and Reformed churches. We are committed to the ordinary means of grace: preaching of the Word, the administration of the Sacraments, and prayer. This is the way God gathers and perfects his people in Christ by the Spirit.

We deeply desire to establish Presbyterian and Reformed churches committed to the ministry of Word and Sacrament.
By God’s grace, we have seen this desire materialize with the establishment of St. Petersburg Presbyterian Church, our first daughter church, planted in 2001; and most recently in Sojourner Presbyterian Church, which began public worship in the USF/Temple Terrace area of Tampa in 2014.
Our commitment to planting churches necessitates training men to serve as pastors in those churches as well as training men to train pastors in Reformed seminaries. Thus, we have consistently allocated funds to support seminary students (at both M.Div. and Ph.D-level studies) and staffed a pastoral intern position.
We believe the college years are formative for Christians and non-Christians alike in our culture. We are committed to reaching the college campus with the truth of God’s Word and the free grace of the gospel revealed in that Word.
We enthusiastically support the campus ministry of our denomination, Reformed University Fellowship, here in Tampa and more broadly:
- RUF Florida Atlantic University
- RUF University of South Florida
- RUF University of Florida
- RUF Florida State University
- RUF Valdosta State
We believe that everyone who trusts Jesus Christ for salvation has a vital role and responsibility in seeking the salvation of those who do not yet know Christ (2 Corinthians 5:11-21). This responsibility begins with, though is not limited to, relationships in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, communities, etc.
We desire to see members of our church develop genuine, loving relationships with non-Christians and to share the gospel with such friends.
Further, we as a church are committed to the spread of the gospel in our city, state and nation. As a church we have looked for ways to involve all members in local outreach and have participated in several Family Missions Trips among other outreaches.
See Thursday Night Community Meal.
We believe the Great Commission commands a deliberate, worldwide focus on the part of the church. As much as we desire the salvation of non-Christians in Tampa, we also desire to see the gospel flourish in every part of the world.
We believe that the universal problem of the world is human sin and that the single solution is the gospel of Jesus Christ. This conviction leads us to support mission activities around the world and to eagerly pursue the establishment of more such ministries.
